All you need is…well…you already know
“There is a war between the ones who say there is a war, and the ones who say that there isn’t.” (Leonard Cohen)
Our culture wars are not a board game, or x-box entertainment, and Christmas is more than a marketing invention. Our current contest has been asking each of you to become the archeologists of your own history, brushing away the sand to uncover episodes of racism in which you were either witness, victim, or maybe even complicit.
But tomorrow is Christmas, a favorite holiday of the faithful and atheists alike, and even those who adhere to alternative concepts of deity, because it represents forgiveness, caring, self sacrifice, love, and all the virtues associated with altruism.
In 1914, quite spontaneously, soldiers in the trenches create a pocket of peace, shared wine and cigarettes and Christmas carols with those they had actively sought to kill, and would again after the day was done. But for a moment, however fragile and temporal, there was peace on earth, goodwill towards men.
Let’s hope for a similar moment on Christmas Day, when those in the trenches can have empathy for everyone lining the trenches on the other side. Who knows. Might start a trend. Might go viral.
Merry Christmas from all of us at A Word with You Press.
